Medical vs recreational cannabis: what's the difference?

Both come from the same plant, but oversight, follow-up and insurance coverage change everything.

Since recreational cannabis was legalized in 2018, the two systems are sometimes confused. Yet medical and recreational cannabis follow clearly distinct frameworks in Canada.

Clinical oversight

Medical cannabis rests on an assessment by a licensed practitioner, a tailored dose and follow-up over time. Recreational cannabis is bought without an assessment, at the adult consumer's discretion.

Follow-up and dosing

With medical cannabis, your practitioner specifies a daily amount and adjusts as needed. This framework aims for consistency and safety, especially when you take other medications.

Insurance and programs

This is a major difference: medical cannabis may be covered by some private plans, Veterans Affairs (VAC) and the CNESST, depending on your situation. Recreational cannabis never is.

Access and age

Medical cannabis goes through a Health Canada licensed producer. In both cases, access is restricted to those of legal age.

Medical cannabis may qualify as a medical expense or be reimbursed by some plans; check based on your situation.
