What is personal production registration?
The framework often searched for as an “ACMPR licence” allows a person holding a medical document to apply to Health Canada to register for producing a limited amount of cannabis for their own medical needs. If the application is accepted, production may be entirely indoors, entirely outdoors, or divided between indoor and outdoor periods — never both at the same time.
Since October 2018, this framework falls under the Cannabis Regulations. In practice, it isn't a "licence" you buy — it's a registration certificate issued by Health Canada based on your medical document. You can produce it yourself (personal production) or name someone else to produce it for you (designated production).
Why grow your own?

How much can I produce?
The amount you can produce and the authorized plant count are calculated from the daily amount on your medical document and the declared method: indoor, outdoor, or a combination divided between separate periods. Simultaneous indoor and outdoor production is not permitted. The formulas appear in section 325 of the Cannabis Regulations; only your registration certificate confirms the exact limits. We don't provide growing instructions.
Personal or designated production
You can produce it yourself, or name an adult to produce it on your behalf — useful if you can't or don't want to grow. A maximum of four registrations can be tied to a single production site.
Eligibility requirements (Health Canada)
- Residency — you must ordinarily reside in Canada.
- Age — you must be at least 18 years old.
- Background — you must attest you haven't been convicted of a cannabis-related offence in the past 10 years.
- One registration — you may not be registered more than once at any time.
