What is the ACMPR licence?

The ACMPR allows a person holding a medical cannabis prescription to register with Health Canada to produce a limited amount of cannabis for their own medical needs — indoors, outdoors, or both.

Since October 2018, this framework falls under the Cannabis Regulations. In practice, it isn't a "licence" you buy — it's a registration certificate issued by Health Canada based on your medical document. You can produce it yourself (personal production) or name someone else to produce it for you (designated production).

To register, you first need a medical document (prescription) from a licensed practitioner. That's the first step Coverleaf helps you take.

How much can I produce?

The amount you can produce and the number of plants allowed are determined by Health Canada, based on the daily amount on your medical document and how you grow (indoors, outdoors, or both). Health Canada calculates these limits using its own formula, and your registration certificate sets out your exact limits. We don't provide growing instructions.

Personal or designated production

You can produce it yourself, or name an adult to produce it on your behalf — useful if you can't or don't want to grow. A maximum of four registrations can be tied to a single production site.

Eligibility requirements (Health Canada)

  • Residency — you must ordinarily reside in Canada.
  • Age — you must be at least 18 years old.
  • Background — you must attest you haven't been convicted of a cannabis-related offence in the past 10 years.
  • One registration — you may not be registered more than once at any time.

Does the ACMPR still exist?
The rules once called ACMPR are now part of the Cannabis Regulations (since October 2018). The principle is the same: with a medical document, you can register with Health Canada to produce your own medical cannabis.
Do I need a prescription to register?
