How private coverage works
Coverage depends on your specific plan. Some insurers and employer plans offer a pre-authorization pathway for medical cannabis: the plan member completes their section, the practitioner completes the medical section, then the request is submitted for approval (Canada Life, for example, uses a pre-authorization form like this). Coverage is never automatic — always confirm your eligibility directly with your insurer or benefits administrator.
What about the medical expense tax credit?
Under CRA rules, eligible medical expenses may be claimed (lines 33099/33199). Whether cannabis expenses qualify depends on CRA rules, your receipts, and meeting the medical-expense requirements. For 2025, the deductible threshold is the lesser of 3% of your net income or $2,834. Coverleaf does not provide tax advice — confirm your situation with the CRA or a professional.

For eligible veterans and injured workers, reimbursement is possible through VAC or a workers' compensation board, subject to approval. We guide you through the whole process.
