Insurance coverage

Your medical cannabis, possibly covered by your insurance.

Some private and workplace benefit plans may reimburse medical cannabis, often through a pre-authorization process. Coverage isn't automatic and depends on your specific plan. We help you check your situation and prepare the documentation.

How private coverage works

Coverage depends on your specific plan. Some insurers and employer plans offer a pre-authorization pathway for medical cannabis: the plan member completes their section, the practitioner completes the medical section, then the request is submitted for approval (Canada Life, for example, uses a pre-authorization form like this). Coverage is never automatic — always confirm your eligibility directly with your insurer or benefits administrator.

What about the medical expense tax credit?

Under CRA rules, eligible medical expenses may be claimed (lines 33099/33199). Whether cannabis expenses qualify depends on CRA rules, your receipts, and meeting the medical-expense requirements. For 2025, the deductible threshold is the lesser of 3% of your net income or $2,834. Coverleaf does not provide tax advice — confirm your situation with the CRA or a professional.

Provided for information only. Coverleaf can provide medical documentation where clinically appropriate, but eligibility and reimbursement rest with your insurer, plan, or the CRA.
