THC and CBD: understanding the difference

THC and CBD are the two most-studied compounds in cannabis. Here's what sets them apart and why the ratio matters.

Cannabis contains dozens of active compounds called cannabinoids. The two most studied are THC and CBD. Understanding their difference helps explain why a practitioner chooses a specific product and ratio.

THC

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is responsible for cannabis's psychoactive effect — the feeling of being 'high'. In a medical context it's often associated with managing pain, nausea and appetite. Because it's intoxicating, it calls for careful dosing, especially at first.

CBD

CBD (cannabidiol) is non-intoxicating: it doesn't produce a high. It's studied notably for anxiety, inflammation and sleep. Many patients prefer a CBD-rich ratio when they want to limit psychoactive effects.

The THC:CBD ratio

Most treatment plans combine the two in a ratio chosen by the practitioner based on your goals and tolerance. There's no universal dose: you generally start low and adjust gradually, with follow-up.
