How to choose a medical cannabis product and seller in Canada

A good choice does not begin with a brand or cultivar name. It starts with the medical document, the goal defined with the practitioner and a Health Canada-authorized seller serving registered patients.

1. Verify federal authorization

Check Health Canada's official list and confirm that the company holds a licence for sale for medical purposes, not only cultivation or processing. Medical registration and direct shipment operate under this federal framework.

2. Compare milligrams, not percentages alone

Look at THC and CBD per activation, millilitre, capsule or unit. For flower, examine concentration and actual package size. Cultivar names can be inconsistent; numbers are more useful for reproducing a dose.

3. Match the format to use

Onset, duration, discretion, respiratory health and ease of measuring a dose point toward an oil, capsule, vaporized flower, edible or topical. The most potent product is rarely the best starting point.

4. Evaluate catalogue continuity

A plan becomes hard to follow if a product disappears every month. Compare formulation stability, available equivalents, small package sizes and clear lot and packaging dates.

5. Review total cost and billing

Compare cost per milligram or gram, delivery fees, order minimums and return policies. For VAC, CNESST or insurance, confirm before purchase whether the seller can process the authorization or bill under the program. Coverage should never be assumed.

6. Measure useful service

• Clear labelling — ratios, milligrams, equivalencies and instructions are easy to find.
• Real availability — inventory is stable enough to continue the plan.
• Administrative support — registration, transfers, documents and billing are clearly explained.
• No medical promises — a responsible seller does not guarantee that a product will treat a disease.
