Medical cannabis capsules, oils and flower: how formats differ

Medical cannabis is available in several regulated product classes. No format is best for everyone: the choice depends on the target symptoms, desired duration, ability to measure the dose, previous experience, medications and the practitioner's assessment.

Medical cannabis capsules and softgels

Capsules provide a labelled amount per unit and are discreet. Like other swallowed products, effects may begin 30 minutes to 2 hours after use, peak later and last several hours. This delay makes it important to wait before taking more.

Cannabis oils

Oils can support small, measured dose adjustments using the product label and dropper. Timing depends on whether the product is swallowed or used as directed under the tongue. Your practitioner can explain the starting dose and adjustment plan.

Dried cannabis flower

Inhaled dried flower generally acts faster than swallowed formats. Health Canada does not recommend smoking cannabis for medical purposes because smoke contains harmful and cancer-causing chemicals. Vaporizing avoids combustion but still carries risks that should be discussed with a practitioner.

Edibles and other formats

Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to begin working and their effects may last 4 to 8 hours. Topicals and other products also exist, but evidence and dosing guidance vary. Always follow the label and keep every cannabis product away from children and pets.
